Today, we celebrate an extraordinary milestone, 50 years of dedicated service by Charles “Chuck” Reeves. Since joining the firm in 1976, Chuck has exemplified everything that defines a great intellectual property attorney: technical depth, legal excellence, unwavering client commitment, and a genuine passion for helping innovators protect and realize the true value of their ideas.

For half a century, Chuck has represented an exceptionally diverse range of clients from individual inventors and start-up businesses to national and international corporations bringing the same level of care, precision, and strategic insight to every matter he has handled. His broad practice has encompassed litigation, domestic and international prosecution, IP portfolio management and strategic planning, and the full spectrum of opinion, transactional, and business-related work involving validity, coverage, and right-to-use issues.

Chuck’s path to the firm reflects the kind of well-rounded foundation that has made him such a trusted and versatile counselor. Before joining us, he served two years as a judicial law clerk to the Honorable Paul H. Buchannan, Jr. on the Indiana Court of Appeals, and he brought with him valuable hands-on technical experience gained in materials and metallurgy research at Purdue University. That rare combination of legal training and genuine engineering expertise has allowed Chuck to truly understand the technologies his clients develop and translate that understanding into sound, effective legal strategy.

While Chuck is comfortable working across many areas of technology, his deep background in materials science has proven particularly valuable across a remarkable breadth of industries and product fields. Over the course of his career, he has advised clients in chemical, automotive, medical device, and other manufacturing sectors, as well as universities, lottery commissions, and wholesale and retail businesses of all kinds. His technical experience spans an impressive range of materials and processes, including copper, aluminum, stainless and specialty steels, titanium, tungsten, polymers, composites, coatings, and beyond. This depth of knowledge has allowed Chuck to meet his clients where they are, in the design lab, on the manufacturing floor, and in the boardroom, and help them navigate the full arc of innovation from development through commercialization.

Beyond his client work, Chuck has generously shared his knowledge and experience through writing and lecturing on intellectual property law to formal academic classes and professional groups throughout Indiana. A lifelong Hoosier, Chuck’s roots run deep in this state, and his commitment to its businesses, institutions, and communities has been as consistent as his commitment to his clients.

Fifty years is more than a career milestone. It is a testament to character, to craft, and to an enduring belief that the work we do for our clients matters. Chuck Reeves has embodied all of that and more.
